The challenge
HM Kala Studio sells paintings, drawings and handmade artwork online. Handmade goods are difficult to merchandise through a standard template store: each piece is unique, stock is limited, and buyers want to see the artwork clearly before paying. They needed a storefront that presented individual pieces properly, took payment securely and did not require manual intervention to update stock.
The solution
We built a custom React storefront with a Node.js and MongoDB backend. Product pages were designed around high-resolution artwork with proper image handling, and the catalogue supports limited-stock handmade pieces where each item is genuinely unique. Stripe handles payment processing, and inventory decrements automatically as orders are placed so the studio never oversells a piece that has already been sold.
How the project was delivered
Discovery
We reviewed how the studio actually sold: through Instagram, WhatsApp and local exhibitions. That told us the website needed to work on mobile first and on a slow connection.
Design
Artwork leads. We designed product pages around the image, with purchase controls kept quiet until the visitor has looked, and checkout reduced to the minimum number of steps.
Development
React front end, Express API and MongoDB data model, with Stripe for payments and an admin view for the studio to add and retire pieces.
Launch
Deployed with a technical SEO foundation — structured product data, sitemap, canonical URLs and image optimisation — from the first release.
The outcome
The studio now sells through a storefront it controls, with payments and stock handled automatically rather than by hand. The site works reliably on mobile, which is where most of the studio's audience arrives.
